Regular exercise, a wholesome diet, and healthy body weight can only go so far when it comes to achieving a firm, attractive midsection. While you may take good care of yourself, you might still be frustrated by a belly bulge and sagging skin. At Weiler Plastic Surgery Group, our board-certified plastic surgeons perform abdominoplasty, often called a tummy tuck, to help patients from Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Covington, Metairie, Slidell, New Orleans, and throughout Louisiana attain the contoured look they envision for themselves. It may be the most effective solution when abdominal skin and muscles don’t bounce back after pregnancy or other major weight loss.

How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?
Our surgeons perform abdominoplasty as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. They typically place an incision that spans between the hip bones just above the pubic area and a second incision that traces the inner navel. After separating the skin from the inner tissues, your surgeon repairs the abdominal muscles if necessary. Your surgeon also performs aggressive liposuction of the belly, hips, and waist to contour the midsection. Your surgeon completes the procedure by smoothing the outer skin down, inserting the navel through its new location in the tightened skin, trimming excess lax skin, and closing the incisions.
During the surgery, two thin tubes called surgical drains are inserted through the incision to remove excess fluid from the treated areas, accelerating healing and reducing swelling.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From A Tummy Tuck?
While recovery rates vary, most patients are ready to return to work and daily activities within 2 weeks. You will need an adult friend or family member to drive you home after surgery and help you out for the first few days. Because a non-opioid medication called EXPAREL® is applied to the surgical area during surgery, pain is typically well controlled for the first 72 hours.
Help the Healing Process
While you may not be able to stand fully upright initially, it is important to get up and walk slowly as soon as the evening of your surgery or the next morning. Light walking promotes circulation and facilitates the healing process.
You will need to wear a surgical body-shaping garment at all times for the first 2 weeks and then as much as possible for 4 to 6 weeks. The constant gentle pressure minimizes swelling and encourages smooth contours as your body heals.
Check in With Your Doctor
You will return for your first post-op check a day or 2 after surgery so we can remove your dressings and examine the incisions. Drains are usually removed at the 1-week post-op visit.
Return to Your Workout Routine
You will need to hold off on strenuous exercise for about 6 weeks or as directed by your doctor.
Enjoy a Few Perks
For one full year following your surgery, we invite you to enjoy special discounts and rewards through our Post-Op Perks program.
Will I Have a Scar After a Tummy Tuck?
While scars are unavoidable, our plastic surgeons take special care to place the tummy tuck incision where it can be concealed by underwear and swimsuits. The vast majority of patients say that the scar is worth it in exchange for the impressive improvements they gain.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much weight can I lose with a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck will likely make you look like you’ve lost weight with a slimmer waist and flatter belly but it is not a weight loss procedure. Patients typically do not lose a substantial amount of weight.
What's included in a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck usually includes body contouring of the lower abdomen, hips, and flanks. Excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen using liposuction and the skin is draped and repositioned to create smoother, firmer contours. After a thorough physical examination, Dr. Weiler will determine if your symptoms also warrant the repair of weakened or separated abdominal muscles and reshaping of the bellybutton.
Will I lose a dress size with a tummy tuck?
Despite a minimal loss of pounds, tummy tuck patients typically lose 2 to 3 dress/pants sizes after their surgery depending on the amount of extra skin and fat that is removed.
Can insurance cover a tummy tuck?
Medical insurance typically does not cover the cost of a tummy tuck because it is considered elective, cosmetic surgery. More extensive skin removal surgery following massive weight loss may be partly or fully covered if a physician says the procedure is medically necessary.
Are tummy tuck results permanent?
Results can be maintained indefinitely if you keep your weight stable and don’t become pregnant.
Is tummy tuck surgery safe?
Tummy tuck surgery is considered safer than ever today, thanks to advanced surgical techniques such as longer-lasting numbing agents, and improved pre-op measures that significantly minimize the risk of complications. Weiler Plastic Surgery enjoys an excellent safety record for tummy tuck surgery and all other procedures.
