A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a procedure our Baton Rouge plastic surgeons perform to lift and reshape the breast, as well as reshape the areola. Over time, the breasts tend to lose their elasticity whether it be from aging, pregnancy, weight loss, or nursing. This loss of elasticity can cause the skin to sag, making breasts lose their natural shape, firmness, and full appearance. When performed as an independent procedure, breast lift surgery helps women from Lafayette, Covington, Metairie, and New Orleans, LA, and other nearby areas rejuvenate their breast shape without a change in size. It is also performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation to help women achieve the fullness and shape they desire and give them the confidence they deserve.*
Because breast tissues are put under a variety of stressors throughout the life of a woman, it’s no surprise that they have a tendency to bow down to gravity over time. Even though it’s natural for breast tissue to sag, it still doesn’t feel normal to have breasts that sit much lower than expected. In addition, this tissue can cause problems for many women, even opening them up to infection in between the layers of skin.
A breast lift is a cosmetic breast enhancement surgery that simply removes the excess tissue that has stretched over time. This procedure tightens the skin in ways that the body can’t any longer. The best part is that when you work with Dr. Weiler, Dr. Hogan, or Dr. Brownlee, you will always feel as if you are emerging from a body that simply wasn’t right into the one that is right for you. Even incisions are placed carefully and stitched carefully in order to reduce any scarring or visible surgical signs.*

Incision Placement
Your surgeon places the breast lift incision around the areola with a linear incision from the bottom of the areola down to the bottom of the breast. This scar hides well under swimsuits and garments. The length of the scar can vary depending on the patient. After a few months, these scars are virtually invisible.* Your surgeon will remove some breast tissue from the bottom of the breast to tighten the supportive tissue, raising the breast and giving them a fuller, rounder, firmer appearance.* The nipple remains intact throughout the procedure and is pulled to a higher location on the breast.
Your Surgical Experience
Breast lifts are performed at Weiler Plastic Surgery on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Patients will need someone to drive them home after the surgery and have someone stay with them a day or two after surgery. A support garment, akin to a bra, is applied after surgery and should be worn for six weeks.
If you are a current smoker, our surgeons advise you to stop smoking a minimum of three weeks prior to your procedure. Smoking can greatly affect the healing process after a breast lift or breast augmentation. All current medications will be reviewed at your preoperative appointment and we will inform you if anything you are taking will need to be stopped prior to surgery.

Our plastic surgeons bring years of experience and dedication to personalized care to the men and women of Louisiana. Founder Dr. Jonathan Weiler is known for his advanced surgical expertise, extensive knowledge, and warm demeanor. One of our plastic surgeons and their office staff will assist in making your surgical experience as easy and comfortable as possible. You will be able to meet with Dr. Weiler, Dr. Hogan, or Dr. Brownlee to discuss your areas of concern and goals for your breast surgery. A physical exam will be done to assess your breasts and you will be given a recommendation for the most effective procedure to meet and exceed your expressed goals, as well as alternative treatments.* At Weiler Plastic Surgery, we’d like for you to take as much time as you need to have all of your questions answered by the professionals. Your satisfaction, desires, and goals are our primary concern.
What to Expect After Surgery
We like to see our patients back in the office one to two days after surgery. At this time, dressings are removed and the incisions are assessed. Questions or concerns will be addressed as well and further instructions reviewed for optimal recovery. After the initial visit, you will be allowed to go home and shower. Patients will be seen at a week and again at two weeks post-operatively, at which time sutures will be removed if they are healing well. You should expect some swelling and bruising initially that will subside within a few weeks. Nipple sensation and skin sensitivity vary depending on the patient, but will return to normal over time.* Walking around after your surgery is very important to promote blood flow and decrease swelling.
Post-Op Activity Restrictions
Typical patients’ recovery after a breast lift procedure are variable, but in general most patients are able to return to work within five to seven days and are back to normal activities within two to three weeks.* Strenuous activity is to be avoided for several weeks following the surgery with patients lifting no more than 10 pounds for the first two weeks. At six weeks most patients are able to resume normal activity and exercise with no restrictions.
For one full year following your surgery, we invite you to enjoy special discounts and rewards through our Post-Op Perks program.
Recovery Timeline After Breast Lift Surgery
While experiences vary, most breast lift patients recover along the following timeline:
Day of surgery: Begin gentle walking multiple times a day.
1 to 2 days: Dressings removed at post-op check. OK to shower.
3 to 5 days: Discomfort peaks.
5 to 7 days: Return to school or nonstrenuous jobs.
6 weeks: Resume strenuous exercise. OK to stop wearing a surgical bra.
6 to 8 weeks: Nipple sensation returns to normal.
6 to 12+ months: Scars fade.
Combining a Breast Lift With Other Procedures
Our surgeons can safely combine breast lift surgery with other procedures to improve multiple areas with a single surgery and recovery period. Options include:
Combining breast enhancement surgery with a tummy tuck is often called a mommy makeover because it rejuvenates areas commonly affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reduce the size of my areolas during a breast lift?
Yes. Our surgeons often resize and reshape the areolas during breast lift surgery.
Is breast lift surgery painful?
Patients typically experience tightness and soreness after breast lift surgery, not pain, because the surgery doesn’t impact the chest muscles.
Is the surgery risky?
While all surgeries involve some risks, you can optimize your safety by having an experienced plastic surgeon like ours perform your breast lift.
Will my breasts be smaller after a lift?
You may need a smaller cup size after breast lift surgery because the excess lax skin will no longer take up space in your bra. Your breasts will be higher and rounder but will not be smaller.
How many years does a breast lift last?
Results last many years if you maintain a stable weight, wear a supportive bra consistently, and do not become pregnant. The aging process will continue, so there is a chance of sagging in the future.
Will my breast sag again after surgery?
Future sagging can be delayed by wearing a good bra as often as possible and avoiding significant weight fluctuations and pregnancy.
Can I go without a bra after getting a breast lift?
Wearing a bra will help you maintain your results as long as possible. It’s best to reserve going braless for special occasions.
Deciding between breast augmentation and a breast lift depends on which breast concerns you want to improve. For sagging (also known as ptosis) or asymmetry in your breasts, a breast lift might be your best option. If you’re concerned about breast size, projection, and asymmetry, breast augmentation is a good choice. If you are wondering,... Read More
