Three Steps of Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Tummy tucks are one the most frequently performed procedure offered, so we get a lot of questions about it, one of which is to describe the process. Technically, the process a surgeon takes to give a patient their desired look is very in-depth and vast, more so than we can explain, but there are three basic steps that can be described.

  1. Fat Removal. The first step in a tummy tuck is removing fatty tissue. Your doctor, will create an incision in the lower abdomen and pull back all the skin. Then he will excise the unwanted fat from the abdominal area.
  2. Muscle Tightening. In this step, your doctor will pull the muscles of the abdominal wall together by suturing the middle section. The muscle is folded inwards, gradually fusing together as the body heals after the procedure.
  3. Skin Removal. The final step is the removal of access skin. After the removal of fatty tissue and pulling the muscle in tight, there is a ton of extra skin that has nowhere to go. The skin will be contoured to fit the new shape of the abdomen, and then removed. Your doctor will finally stitch you back up, to prepare your body for the healing process.
