Breast Augmentation

Women choose to augment their breasts for many different reasons. Breast augmentation patients from Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Hammond and New Orleans, Louisiana, come to Weiler Plastic Surgery seeking our board-certified plastic surgeons’ expertise about breast augmentation and implants. Breast augmentation is designed to create a fuller, shapelier appearance. Breast augmentation can enhance breasts that have always been small, or restore volume for women whose breasts deflated after weight loss or childbirth.*

This cosmetic surgery will provide you with a natural look to enhance your body image and overall self-confidence. Dr. Weiler or Dr. Daugherty will work with you to help you achieve the look and feel that you’ve always wanted.*

Are You a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Virtually any woman who is in good overall health and wants to enhance the size or shape of her breasts is a potential candidate for breast augmentation. It’s also important to consider the reasons for wanting breast enhancement surgery. Getting breast implants because it’s what a spouse or partner wants is usually a bad idea. If you want to feel more confident in your body, breast augmentation can be an excellent solution.

Some common reasons for breast augmentation include:

  • Small or asymmetrical breasts
  • Pregnancy, weight loss, or aging has affected the size and shape of your breasts
  • You desire a better proportioned or more appealing figure
  • You’re looking for cosmetic improvements after breast reconstruction

What’s the Difference Between Saline and Silicone Implants?

There are two primary implant options for breast augmentation: silicone breast implants or saline breast implants.

  • 0.9% Injectable NaCl
  • Filled by surgeon
  • Adjustable size and overfill
  • Firmer
  • Wrinkling and rippling more common
  • Deflation visible

Silicone Gel

  • Silicone gel matrix
  • Prefilled by manufacturer
  • Softer, more natural feel
  • Less wrinkling and rippling
  • “Silent rupture” risk

Incision Placement

Dr. Weiler or Dr. Daugherty place the implants below the chest muscle through a small incision approximately 4 cm long. The incision for a breast augmentation is placed under the fold of the breast and hides very well under swimsuits and undergarments. Within a few months the scar is virtually invisible.*

Your Surgical Experience

This procedure is performed at Weiler Plastic Surgery under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Patients will need someone to drive them home after surgery and stay with them for a day or two. After the procedure, patients are placed in a bra garment that is to be worn at all times for six weeks.

The Consultation Process

One of our plastic surgeons and their office staff will assist in making your surgical experience as easy and comfortable as possible. You will be able to meet with Dr. Weiler, Dr. Daugherty, or one of their Physician Assistants to discuss your areas of concern and goals for your breast surgery. A physical exam will be done to assess your breasts and you will be given a recommendation for the most effective procedure to meet and exceed your expressed goals, as well as alternative treatments.* At Weiler Plastic Surgery, we’d like for you to take as much time as you need to have all of your questions answered by the professionals. Your satisfaction, desires, and goals are our primary concern.

What to Expect After Surgery

We like to see our patients back in the office one to two days after surgery. At this time, dressings are removed and the incisions are assessed. Questions or concerns will be addressed as well and further instructions reviewed for optimal recovery. After the initial visit, you will be allowed to go home and shower. Patients will be seen at a week and again at two weeks post-operatively, at which time sutures will be removed if they are healing well. You should expect some swelling and bruising initially that will subside within a few weeks. Nipple sensation and skin sensitivity vary depending on the patient, but will return to normal over time.* Walking around after your surgery is very important to promote blood flow and decrease swelling.

Post-Op Activity Restrictions

Typical patients’ recovery after a breast augementation procedure are variable, but in general most patients are able to return to work within five to seven days and are back to normal activities within two to three weeks.* Strenuous activity is to be avoided for several weeks following the surgery with patients lifting no more than 10 pounds for the first two weeks. At six weeks most patients are able to resume normal activity and exercise with no restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The cost of breast augmentation depends on several factors. The type of breast implants, the training and experience of the plastic surgeon, the type of anesthesia used, and the location of the practice can all influence the total price of breast augmentation. We provide patients with a detailed price quote after the consultation. We also offer a number of financing options to help make cosmetic plastic surgery accessible to as many people as possible.

How long do breast implants last?

Breast implants—either silicone gel or saline—can last for many, many years. You may often hear that implants should be replaced 10 years after getting breast augmentation, but this is a generalization that isn’t necessarily true for everyone. Some women have the same implants for 15 or more years. If you have silicone gel implants, it’s important to get routine MRI exams to detect any cracks or ruptures. Saline implants quickly deflate if they leak.

What is natural breast augmentation?

The term “natural breast augmentation” refers to a technique called fat transfer breast augmentation. This technique, also called fat grafting, involves using the patient’s own fat to augment the breasts. This technique is limited to women who want a very modest increase in the size of their breasts (a cup size at most).
