Things To Do in Lafayette

Originally called Vermilionville, Lafayette is the 4th largest city in Louisiana and offers visitors endless entertainment, culture, food, and Southern hospitality. Here’s just a taste of what you can enjoy.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette

How many colleges can boast a swamp on campus? UL Lafayette is the only U.S. university with a managed wetland on its campus. Cypress Lake is the home to captivating Acadiana wildlife such as alligators, snapping turtles, and herons. The university is also the home of the NCAA Division 1 Ragin’ Cajun athletics that includes football, basketball, baseball, softball, and track and field.

CAJUNDOME & Convention Center

This 13,000-seat multipurpose facility, owned by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, hosts a variety of sporting events, concerts, conventions, and family shows. It also hosts several music and arts festivals, an important part of the Acadiana community.

Mardi Gras

Not everyone is into the wild, raucous carnival that is New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. Many enjoy the state’s second-largest Mardi Gras celebration they find in Lafayette for a super fun and family-friendly experience.

Downtown Lafayette

Within the heart of Lafayette, the downtown area encompasses less than 2 square miles with hundreds of cute shops, restaurants, and art galleries, as well as a children’s museum and multiple parks for outdoor enjoyment. It’s also home to many holiday celebrations, music events, and lively festivals like the Festival International de Louisiane in April.

Girard Park

This lovely 33-acre public outdoor space includes a 1.25-mile jogging trail, an outdoor pool, and even a playground constructed specifically for the enjoyment of children with special needs. Celebrating Cajun and Creole culture, music, crafts, and food, the park also hosts the delightful Festivals Acadiens et Créoles.

Avery Island

This quaint island, located 30 miles south of Lafayette, is where the iconic TABASCO® brand pepper sauce was created in the mid-19th century by Edmund McIlhenny. People can tour greenhouses where the actual peppers are grown and the working factory where pepper sauce is still manufactured today. Visitors to Avery Island can also enjoy Jungle Gardens and Bird City, a 170-acre botanical garden and bird sanctuary.

Acadian Village

Step back in time by touring the authentic 19th-century Acadian homes, doctor’s office, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, and church. In December, the village hosts Noël Acadien au Village, a holiday festival that features a half-million lights, live entertainment, carnival rides, local cuisine, and of course, Santa Claus.

Notable Restaurants in Lafayette

  • Café Vermilionville offers classic dinner favorites such as seafood gumbo, foie gras, and rack of lamb.
