Signs You May Need Breast Reduction Surgery

Women-Breast-Reduction-300x199

There are a number of symptoms and signs that might indicate you are the ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery that go beyond simply wanting smaller breasts. As this is a relatively significant elective form of cosmetic surgery, you will need to work with your cosmetic surgeon to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for breast reduction. Not only does having overly large breasts often present significant physical challenges, they can also create a substantial amount of emotional discomfort and stress.

Common Signs You May Be Right for Breast Reduction

While you might simply think your breasts are too large and having smaller breasts might make you look and feel better, these are only a small portion of what must be taken into consideration when discussing the possibility of breast reduction surgery. Here are several other very important signs that must be taken into consideration.

  • Breasts that seem to be out of proportion to the rest of your body.
  • Pain in the neck, back, and shoulders caused by the weight of your breasts.
  • Grooves in the tops of your shoulders that have been caused by your bra straps.
  • The weight of your breasts adversely affecting your posture.
  • Breasts that droop due the excess weight causing your nipples and areolas to point downwards.
  • Being unable to participate in sports or other physical activities due to the size/weight of your breasts.
  • Having breasts that are unequal in size with one being significantly larger.
  • Constant rashes and infections in the skin under your breasts.
  • Having a hard time sleeping due to discomfort caused by overly large breasts.
  • Feeling self-conscious about the size of your breasts in public.

Making the Decision

If you find that you have experienced one or more of the above symptoms, you may be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery. Reducing the size of your breasts will bring you immediate relief from a number of these conditions by adjusting the size of your breasts to more accurately match the proportions of the rest of your body. Not only will a breast reduction alleviate these issues, but it will enhance your overall body shape and help your clothing to fit better.

I am only 15 and I am a DD. I have to wear 2 bras when I work out. I have torn my back muscle and have had many back problems since I was 12. I hate wearing things that are tight to the skin or even close to my skin because I am really self-conscious. I hate the fact that I can’t sit up straight for long periods of time because it makes my back hurt. I feel like my whole body is being weighed down, like I just tied a really big weight to my shoulders and can’t straighten my back.

I been a DD since I was 14. I have had back problems for 11 years. My bra always digs into my shoulders. One is bigger then the other. None of my bra’s hold me up either cause of the weight. My back always hurts and its hard to sit because of the weight. I been on. a low carb diet with my mother and my waist and hips have shrunk in size. But my chest is bigger.

From the time I started middle school at 11, I had size D breast at the time, I’ve had larger breast for my age. My breast are now a triple D or bigger I could be wrong. The back pain, neck pain, emotional pain, I’ve been feeling about my breast from a young age has caused me to come to the conclusion that I need breast reconstruction. There is always someone watching me in public and I can’t even do something as simple as running without eyes on me.

  • Anita says:

Hi my name is Anita and I was a DD in 7th grade and after I had kids they got bigger. I think they said I was an H or J now. I have spent $1000’s of dollars in bras to have none fit me. Even the H’s at a high end department store that was promised to fit did not. I have severe back problems and pain and neck pain. I can’t not sit up straight. They are extremely heavy and even alot of shirts dont fit. And the ones that do look awful. I would like to go down to a D if that’s possible. The thing is I would need my Insurance to cover this. I’ve had miner heart surgery for an SVT and am on heart meds and it’s very hard to breath because of the size of my breast. alot of times I have to sleep sitting up because its heard to breath. It makes it very difficult to exercise even.

  • McKenzie Vialpando says:

Hi I’m Kenzie and I’m considering breast reduction because since 7th grade I’ve felt self conscious about my size because I was a D then and now I’m a triple D, and in 11th grade now, and i just feel uncomfortable all the time and my family even teases me about my breast size calling them big even in front of other people and it makes me really uncomfortable. It feels like I only want this reduction for looks and I don’t want that, but my size, even if it doesn’t even look that big, makes me super uncomfortable and awkward when my friends tell me to hurry up and I have to fast walk so I can avoid running. In addition to this i always have a red line across my upper stomach from the wire because my bra and it bugs me, I also feel as if I have bad posture. I’m sorry if I sound like a cry baby, but do you think I qualify for things to be eligible for a reduction?

    • Meghan Landry says:

      Hi Kenzie!

Thank you for your comment. One of our consultants will be in touch with you very shortly with more information on the procedure, and scheduling an in-person consultation!

I am 27 years old, all of the women in my family have large breast on my mom’s side. On my dads side they don’t have much. I got blessed with having a breast from each side of my family. The left side is a 3.5 hand fulls and the other side is 1.5 hands. I work for 13.5 hour for only three days out of my week. During those days I have they most painful pinch in the my neck over to my upper left shoulder all the way down to the lower part of my ribs. I took off my bra last night and I was in so much of a relief because the bra that I was wearing started to dig into my shoulders that I now have two very distinctive bruises going across them. I’m not self-conscious or insecure about my body but I am tried of the pain that I have had to indorare since I was 10.

I am a 40 year old women, who had big breast since a young age. I’ve had to wear two bra’s in the past, when I’m working out or running and my bra is always digging in my shoulders. My
neck, shoulders, and lower back constantly hurts.

  • Kayla Bostic says:

I’m 19 years old and I’ve had large breasts since the 6th grade when I was 11/12. I went from a training bra to a B cup over that summer and before the following school year ended, I became a C cup. They never seem to stop getting bigger. Right now, I’m a DDD (or at least the bra size I was measured for. My breasts always seem to slide out of the top when I bend down while I’m at work. It’s like that with every bra I’ve had in “my size”).

I ALWAYS have to wear two bras in public because one can’t do it alone. I wear a regular bra with underwire and a sports bra on top. I’m always having back pains, and I can’t sit up straight. My slouch is so bad, I feel like I’m going to develop scoliosis, but when I try to correct my posture, I can’t do it for longer than a minute and a half or I’ll begin to ache. Slouching is one of my only forms of relief. Another way is when I’m at a table, I tend to rest them on top of the table so that I’m not carrying the weight. I don’t mean to do it either, as I know it isn’t proper, but it’s become subconscious at this point.

I also have a lot of trouble sleeping. I can’t sleep on my back or my stomach because they make me feel choked and when I stand up after laying in a position like that, my head begins to throb as if I have high blood pressure or something. I can’t lay on my sides because my breasts slide to my side and a lot of the time they begin to lose circulation and go tingly/numb.

My breasts look drastically bad. My nipples point downwards and one is definitely bigger than the other.

I’m trying to lose weight as well, but it’s hard to do with the size of my breasts. They prevent me from even doing a short hustle across a room.

    • Meghan Landry says:

  • Elliana Booth says:

Hi, I am 18 years old and have DD’s and am 5’7.
I have a hard time because I feel as though my boobs are quite large and one is significantly larger than the other, but I feel as though I’m not deserving of a breast reduction because most people I read about are quite shorts with much larger breasts, but I do feel uncomfortable in my skin and wearing bras at this point is uncomfortale

    • Meghan Landry says:

      Hi Elliana,

Thank you for your comment! We always recommend coming in for an in-person consultation to meet with one of our Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, in order to see if you would be an excellent candidate for the procedure. • Diamond Starkes says:

Hi, I’m only 14 and have supper big boobs. When I go out I wear jackets because I don’t want anyone to see me, my bra straps always dig in me. When my mom was my age she had very little boos but I guess I just got un-lucky, my back always hurt and I barely get any sleep because I don’t wanna harm myself if I hit them or smush them. As I got to the age I’m at now my posture has gotten horrible and I can’t exercise but I’m in NJROTC so I have to do it through the pain and all.

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Diamond. It sounds like you are a candidate for a breast reduction. We are happy to see you for a consultation! One of our consultants will be reaching out to you shortly.

  • Jessica says:

I have had a D cup since middle school. Now in my first year of college I am at the top end of a 36DD. I have constant rashes under my breasts as they sag, even in bras and no bra seems to ever fit right. I am extremely self conscious and do not like to wear tight clothes, which makes me look bigger than I am.

  • Lola says:

I am 20 years old I have no children my bra size is 38 DDD which cause my boobs to drop very low I am not really self conscious about it because I love my body but my boobs are starting to affect my health. I have costochondritis which is very painful and the weight of my boobs make it worst, from time to time my shoulders would hurt a lot , my back also hurt which affects my posture and I have recently realized when I lay on my back it affects my breathing. My GP told me during my last physical exam that doing a breast reduction might be the only way to get relief

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Lola! A breast reduction may be a great option for you. We are happy to have you a come in for a consult!

  • Skylar Heald says:

I’m 18 and I wear a H, I’m also diagnosed with scoliosis, most of the doctors I’ve seen have said I don’t need a reduction, but im in constant pain and can never seem to catch a break. I’ve yearned for a reduction forever, I just want some help to not feel so weighed down anymore. I hate not being able to wear bikinis because no tops fit me. I hate that I can’t wear shirts regularly without feeling ashamed. I’ve been bullied since I was younger about how they were fake, I just want to go down to a C, that’s all I ask.

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hey Skylar! We are happy to have you come in for a consultation. Feel free to give us a call at 225-399-0001!

Hello I’m sofia and I’m 14 and I’m a 32DDD . My boobs cause me too have bad posture, neck and back problems which results in me getting migraines daily. I can’t sleep because it always hurts me when lying on the side and i have to lie on my back. I have so much trouble finding comfortable bras that don’t cut into my skin leaving red marks on my shoulder back and stomach. I’m relatively average size and I love my body except my boobs which cause me too much emotional distress. My family aunt and grandma harass me calling me fat constantly telling me I need to loose weight because my boobs make me look bigger . Kids at school are always asking m what my cup size is and make me really insecure and no one believes me when I tell them I’m 14. I can’t even play sports or run with because they hurt a lot and they’re just always in the way.

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Sofia! One of our consultants will be reaching out to you shortly with more information regarding the breast reduction!

  • Cami Leclerc says:

I’ve always had really large breasts, and all the girls on my mom’s side do. I’m 16 with a 36DD size. I’m 5’10 and my mom often comments on my poor posture. I find it really difficult to sleep on my sides. I can’t seem to find a sports bra in my size that also provides a good level of comfort. I tend to feel incredibly self conscious about my breasts. The pain has gotten to the point where I have trouble breathing

  • Hannah says:

I’ve had large breasts since middle school and am now 21. I am only 4’11 and have triple DDDs almost larger. I cannot run or find bras that fit, I can’t stand up straight bc my back will hurt so much, I almost cry. My boobs are so big my neck and shoulders and back all hurt for years. I am a 32DDD so finding bras is almost impossible too! Should breast reduction be possible?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Hannah, one of our Plastic Surgeons will be able to answer that for you! If you are still interested call us at 225-399-0001 and we will connect you with a consultant.

  • Kelly says:

My name’s Kelly I’m 17 and I think I’m a DD, I’ve gotten measured many times but the numbers range from 42-44 DD to 36 DDD. I have a significantly smaller waist then my chest, so I have multiple sized bras because none fit quite right, there’s either spillage or severe under boob issues. I have to wear two sports bras when I work out and I still lack proper support because like I said, I’m not completely sure on my bra size. I have no issue with my breasts cosmetically, but much so physically. It’s extremely difficult for me to maintain straight posture, I have issues with staying asleep due to back pain, I have grooves in my shoulders, and I get issues with shortness of breath when my breasts are unsupported. I applied for a reduction when i was 15 and my insurance said I was too young, so I did some physical therapy and I waited until 16, no cigar. My hope now at 17 is pretty much crushed. I have had to quit sports, i have been late to school A LOT because im losing sleep at night, there are too many moments in my young life I feel like crying from being sick of my back, neck and shoulders aching or locking up. Im 17 and I feel 70. I have no idea what to do, tis why im commenting on this blog. Im at a severe loss and I’m miserable.

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Emma! Thank you for your comment. A breast reduction may be a great option for you. I’d recommend setting up a consultation with one of our surgeons. Feel free to give us a call at (225)399-0001

  • ains says:

i am 17 and wear a 32J and have grooves in my shoulders from my bras, constant red marks/pain from my bras, poor posture, im so incredibly self conscious about it. it’s the first thing people notice about me and people often talk to me about it. do you think if i decide to get a surgery that it could be covered by insurance ?

  • Bailie says:

I have had larger breasts for as long as I can remember. Women in my family have had reductions. I am 23 and have had back, neck, and shoulder pain for 10+ years. They are very uneven in size and are very very heavy. Working out is impossible without TWO sports bras. They hurt running when they bounce because they are just so dang heavy 🙁 help! I have no health insurance right now but am always in constant pain :(((

  • Jada Lee says:

Hi my name is Jada and I’m 19. I honestly don’t even know what bra size I am. All I know is that I’m a 36 or 30 something triple D. Since I was about in middle school I’ve always had larger breasts and I’ve always been self conscious about it. I also played sports a lot since I was young and as I got older I stopped because it was so uncomfortable to run and I am never able to find a sports bra or regular bra that fits me right and doesn’t leave marks on my skin. I also have very very bad back pain and I’ve had it for a while now. And at night it’s uncomfortable sometimes for me to sleep and I get so hot and feel like I’m suffocating. And the bras that I do have to wear it’s so uncomfortable wearing them because I feel like they don’t even fit me properly. I’m always wearing hoodies or t shirts to cover up but it gets so hot and I want to be able to wear tank tops and shirts that are easy to breath in without feeling discomfort or self conscious. One breast is also larger than the other. I’ve read into Breast reduction and I’ve seen people say to wait til your older and your body is fully developed but I honestly cant wait any longer and I’m 19 so I think my body is close to being done developing. I just want to go down as many cup sizes as I can where they’re not too small but a good size for my body.

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Jada! Thank you for your comment. A breast reduction may be a great option for you. I’d recommend setting up a consultation with one of our surgeons. Feel free to give us a call at (225)399-0001

  • Sydney Andres says:

I’m a 38 DD and i’ve always had larger breasts than most. I’m constantly in pain (shoulders, back, and most of all, my neck) and can never sit up straight for too long without my breasts weighing me back down or causing back pain. I’m a little overweight, but I’ve lost 22 pounds and my breasts haven’t shrunk in size at all. I have a difficult time wearing a bra as the straps dig into my shoulders and I can’t run/work out correctly because it only causes me pain. I need my insurance to cover a breast reduction, but I’m a bit nervous that they won’t considering i’m about 15 pounds over weight.

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Sydney! Thank you for reaching out. We do accept a couple third party financing options, and one of our consultants will be contacting out to you shortly!

  • Jessica Prater says:

I was the only girl in the 3rd grade with C cup breast. This made me hate school. Kids are cruel and mean. I was humiliated all the time. By the 5th grade I was well over a DD. I have never been able to find a bra that fit me correctly. My back, shoulders, neck, and ribs hurt daily. I can’t sit up straight. I have tendonitis in my right shoulder. Most of the time there is chafing and or a rash under my breast. My left is slightly bigger. But that slight difference is a huge difference in the way my left shoulder feels. I can’t run or sleep on my back due to the weight. I don’t wear “girly” clothes at all because the pretty shirts never fit. T-shirts for me. I believe the pain in what I think is my sciatic nerve is caused by my huge boobs. My nipples point straight to the floor. Since my early 20s I’ve even lost weight and that didn’t help matters at all. My breast stayed the same size but got a lot more saggy. Put weight back on and now they are bigger than I have ever been. To be honest I don’t know my breast size. All I know they are humungous. I’m in pain and want to be,look, and feel normal. I could keep going on for days about my breast problems. I hate them. Just simply hate them. Ugh

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Jessica! The breast reduction may be an option for you. We encourage you to come in for a consultation with one of our surgeons. We will have someone provide you with more information, and feel free to give us a call at 225-399-0001!

  • Desiree Dossou Yoro Gemma says:

I have always had big breasts due to most of my family having them. One is noticeably larger than the other (atleast for me) and all the bras that i try end up feeling really uncomfortable after a little while. I believe im a D, but i could be bigger. The bra straps also leave a mark on my shoulder when i wear a bra for a whole day. All this leads to me becoming very insecure about my body and i hate wearing clothes that fit tight with my body because of this. I have recently been thinking about getting a breast reduction surgery, but never went through with it because of age (im 15 about to turn 16 in about 2 months)
    and cost.

  • Ingrid says:

Hello good morning. My daughter is now 18 but has been wearing DDD bras for the past few years. She continuously cries for back pains and her nipples points downwards. She also gets rashes between and under her breasts. She went out to do a Christmas camp and majority of her tops can’t fit her. I know it’s affecting her self esteem and I wish to help her. It’s quite strange because at age 12 there were no boobs and she didn’t wear
trainers for long the breasts just came. We are in the Caribbean so I am not sure how things will happen with Covid-19 in the air. I need you help.

I’m 21. I’m from Ontario, Canada. I went to my doctor in the summer because my breasts have become a huge problem in my life. I get chest pain, back pain and its extremely hard to exercise to lose the weight on my own.

I’m 5’6. And I weight around 290-300lbs but I do not look morbidly obese. The weight i carry is in my breasts, my tummy and thighs. My fave has slimmed, my calves have slimmed and I have a smaller waist.

Anyways my doctor referred me to a plastic surgeon approving me tothe next step. But I got a call a week later and was told I was denied…because my BMI is too high. I get told I sound ignorant in asking why it matters when my breasts are causing these problems. The surgeon didn’t even see me in person thats what hurt the most.

Anyways just wanted to let my frustration out.

Hi my name is Kaitlyn, 6 years ago I started with a C cup in 5th grade and then went from a C to a D just over the summer. Into 6th. As I grew through each grade my breasts grew bigger and it was incredibly embarrassing and hard for me to do P.E. sense I was young I never found the right bra size until now. I’m in 11th grade I’m 16 and I’m in a 48DD. I have tons of back and shoulder pain all the time and my posture is horrible due to the weight of my chest. I also get rashes underneath my breasts where my bra is. My mom says breast reduction is
too expensive but im in pain. What should I do?

I am 27 years old and I am currently wearing a 36 DDD some stores says it’s an I. I have a constant slouch in my posture because my breasts are too heavy for my back. I cannot sit for too long without having to remove my bra for sometime to reduc the pull on my shoulders.I have or experience most of the concerns you listed above.I purposefully hide them under bigger t-shirts because I’m embarrassed. I don’t feel comfortable in my cloths because of them.

  • Abbigail says:

I’ve been a DD cup since I was 13, when I was in high school I was told I was now a DDD. I’m now 21 and the last time I got measured I was told I was a 32G cup. I feel incredibly disproportionate since I’m a skinnier girl. My back hurts all the time and I have a hard time keeping good posture. I’m pretty sure i have small dents that have been forming. I find it incredibly difficult to find bathing suits and tops that are cute and actually fit me well.

I Live In St. Peter’s, Missouri & I Wear A 44DDD Because My Breast’s Are TOO BIG & It’s Affecting My Posture REALLY BAD Where My Breast’s Are Pulling Me Forward Causing Me To Look Like I’m Hunched Over.
I Have Degenerative Disc Disease & I Think If I Didn’t Have Such BIG Breast’s I’d Be Able To Walk Straight Upward & NOT Be Hunched Over & It’s VERY VERY Embarrassing To Have People Stare At You.
That’s How I Feel About Them & If There Was A Way That I Could I Would Take Them Off Hang Them In The Closet & Put Them On In The Morning. ? But I’m Serious Because If You Can’t Laugh At Yourself Or Your Situation You’ll Be Gloomy Like I Have Been Because I’ve Been Depressed.
Some Friend’s Of Mine Who Are Small Breasted Tell Me They Wish They Had What I Have. I’d Told Them If I Could I Would Donate Some Of The Part’s Of Skin If That Was Possible To Help Someone Else Out.
Thank You For Reading This Message.
    Sincerely Your’s,
    Joy Gayton
