What is a Neck Lift?

When speaking on the topic of plastic surgery, statistically, breasts rank number one in surgical procedures performed, so you most likely know someone who have had their breasts augmented. Towards the bottom of the list is the neck lift, which is somewhat interesting, considering the neck is the first place to exhibit signs of aging. Men and women age and often develop a fatty jowl, sometimes referred to as a ”turkey neck.” What then, is a neck lift?

All about neck lifts

A neck lift improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the neck area by tightening the skin and muscles underneath, and also by improving the tissue of the jawline. The neck region is a difficult one to address when it comes to alternative treatments or prevention because you can’t diet your way to a younger neck, and creams don’t offer noticeable benefits. Neck lifts are usually the best option for mitigating your turkey neck. People who are considering a neck lift may have some of the following issues:

  • A fatty jowl or “gobble neck” makes you look older than you actually are
  • A neck with excess fat
  • A jawline that is blurred and indistinct
  • An excess of wrinkles and fine lines

There are some pros and cons of a neck lift you should consider before a consultation, the pros being an increased youthful profile with a distinction in the jawline. The cons are few and include: a tight neck for a few months post surgery, possible fluid retention or bleeding afterwards, and increased awareness of aging in untreated areas.

If you experience any of the above issues, a neck lift is perfect to restore confidence and youth, but how do you know you’re a candidate for a neck lift?  To even be considered for a neck lift, you have to meet the following criteria:

  • A noticeable excess of skin and fat in your neck
  • An excess of folds, fine lines, and wrinkles
  • An indistinct jawline where a separation from your face to your neck isn’t present

What is involved in a neck lift?

A neck lift can be part of a series of procedures, such as contouring or liposuction, or a stand-alone procedure. First, incisions are made either behind the ears or chin, depending on what your surgeon recommends. Then the platysma muscle — the broad sheet of muscle located on both sides of the neck, extending and rising over the collarbone — is tightened, and the surplus of fat and skin are removed. Lastly, the surrounding tissue and skin is reformed and are fastened with sutures. The small incisions are closed, drained, and bandaged.

The incisions that are created result in minimal scarring depending on the correction and change made to the area. A neck lift is a routine, cosmetic surgery with little down time and excellent results!
