Do’s and Don’ts Before + After Your Filler Treatment

It can be intimidating to receive Juvéderm®, Restylane®, or other dermal fillers for the first time. Here at Baton Rouge, Hammond, and Denham Springs’ Weiler Plastic Surgery, we believe that educating our patients allows them to make the best decisions for their individual needs. We understand that, although it’s a small, nonsurgical and relatively painless procedure, receiving fillers or BOTOX® can be intimidating for someone who’s never done it. Because of this, we’ve put together a little guide for what to expect before and after receiving a filler treatment.

What to Do Before Lip Fillers and Injections

In order to reduce the amount of bruising and swelling at the injection site, Dr. Weiler makes the following recommendations about how to prepare for fillers:

One Week Prior to Lip Injections

  • Avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve.
  • Avoid supplements, including St. John’s Wort, Gingko biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E.

2 Days Prior to Injections

  • Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, or any “anti-aging” products.
  • Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on the area to be treated.
  • Do start taking Arnica two days prior to the procedure. (This is not required, but it will help to lessen bruising.)

24 Hours Prior to Injections

  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior.

General Recommendations

  • If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another eruption of cold sores. Please let your physician assistant know if you are prone.
  • Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any ingredients, or suffer from neurological disorders. Please inform us if you have any questions about this prior to your treatment. You can learn more about what to expect from lip fillers in this related blog post.

The Day Of Treatment

  • Arrive at the office with a “clean face”—washed and without makeup.
  • In order to maximize your comfort during the procedure, a topical anesthetic may be applied. In some cases, a local numbing medication will be injected into or around the area(s) to be treated.

What to Do After Fillers: the First Hour

  • Apply an ice pack and Arnica topically—Arnica + Bromelain tablets are both natural supplements to reduce bruising. These are available for purchase in our offices.
  • Take acetaminophen to reduce pain as necessary.
  • Avoid itching, massaging, or picking around the injection site. This is normal and generally disappears within a few hours to a few days. If these symptoms last more than 3 days, please contact our office.

How to Reduce Swelling After Lip Injections

6 to 10 Hours After Treatment

  • Until the swelling and redness have resolved, avoid intense heat in the treated area(s). This includes sunbathing, tanning, saunas, hot tubs, or hot wax.
  • To help alleviate swelling, we recommend an antihistamine during the day, such as Zyrtec or Claritin, and Benadryl at night.
  • If there is a visible bump, you can massage the area. Depending on the areas treated and the product used, you may feel “firmness.” These areas will soften and settle with time (usually 1-2 weeks).
  • Sunscreen and makeup can be applied, and you may use a gentle cleanser on the area.

How to Reduce Bruising After Fillers

  • Avoid drinking alcohol or partaking in strenuous exercise, as it may result in additional bruising.
  • To help alleviate bruising, we recommend taking Arnica or Bromelain, eating fresh pineapple, and applying ice to the area.

    Hiya,

Is it okay to fly after having lip filler?
I’m flying 2 days after having my lip fillers and I’m nervous if the air pressure could impact the swelling!

    • Meghan Landry says:

      Hi Louise!

Thank you for your comment. We always recommend following up with your expert injector with any questions or concerns. We welcome you to call our office at 225-399-0001. Thank you!

  • Ashok Thanki says:

Is it true that dermal fillers treatment once done, you have to continue the same every 5-6 months? in that case ,as per my dermatologist, the quantity of injections will be reduced within one and a half year. I mean from 8 njections to 6 to 4 and 2. Is he right in saying so?

    • Meghan Landry says:

      Hi Ashok,

Thank you for your comment! It would be the most helpful to see your facial structure and talk to you in person. Some dermal fillers only last for approximately six months so that may be what your provider was referring to. As far as the tapered ratio, that is new to me. For any questions or concerns, we recommend following up with your expert injector. Feel free to give us a call at our office at 225-399-0001.

  • Emily says:

I massaged my filler after receiving it, I didn’t receive any follow up information and I thought you were supposed to do that. Could I have a bad outcome from massaging the treated areas?

    • Meghan Landry says:

      Hi Emily,

Thank you for your comment! I am sure that you did not mess up your filler. Occasionally you can feel the filler and we encourage you to softly massage that area. Otherwise, leave it alone. We have a filler handout that is given to patients to instruct them on aftercare. For any questions or concerns, we recommend following up with your expert injector. Feel free to give us a call at our office at 225-399-0001.

    • Meghan Landry says:

Hi Mika! We encourage you to avoid alcohol before filler due to bruising risk. You do not have to avoid alcohol after. For any questions or concerns, we recommend following up with your expert injector. Feel free to give us a call at our office at 225-399-0001.

  • Jasmine jackson says:

I had Restylane-L and Restylane Lyft in cheeks, mid face, under eye area… I ABSOLUTELY HATE how I look I had 2 and a half syringes on each side of my face.. I had a little dissolved but it burned a lot and was super scary.. can I be sure that all of this filler will dissolve? Will my face ever be the same before this nightmare?

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hi Jasmine!
The duration for Restylane-L and Resytlane Lyft is approximately 18 months, and should be gone by then. You can always have more dissolved in the meantime, but I recommend following up with your expert injector!

    • Meghan Landry says:

Hi Alycia! Thank you for your comment. You can continue using your retinol and normal skin care products 24 hours after your filler treatment. Let us know if you have any other questions!

  • caro hernandez says:

What happens if you smoke marijuana before or after getting nose fillers? Or how long is it recommended to not smoke after the procedure?

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hey Caro!
That should not affect your procedure, but I recommend discussing with your expert injector!

  • Ligi says:

I had skin needling 10 days after I had fillers. Now I read that this should not have been done so shortly after injecting the fillers. Could I have ruined the results of my fillers.

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hi Ligi!
Typically, we recommend waiting about 10-14 days after your filler for microneeedling. We recommend following up with your expert injector to be sure you are still pleased with your results!

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hi Odette!
Some lasers are okay immediately post treatment, but to be safe we recommend waiting 1-2 weeks post filler. Be sure to check with your expert injectors for specific instructions!

  • Raquel says:

Is it ok to resume cardio and heavy sweat session 48 hours after dermal fillers? I’m concerned I might have affected my fillers around laugh lines

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hey Raquel!
We recommend waiting 24-48 hours before resuming cardio activity after your fillers!

  • Tanya says:

I was wondering if it’s ok to lay down for a nap 3 hours after my restylane Lyft injections. I am laying on my back of course…. is this ok?

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hey Tanya!
Waiting about 3 hours is a good time frame before laying down after your injections.

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hi Kim,
You should be fine, but since every peel is different, we recommend discussing with your expert injector prior to the injections!

  • Rachel Wisdom says:

I had filler injected to fill eye hollows over a month ago. I feel bumps and area under my eyes looks a little lumpy. I don’t want to try more filler. What can I do?

    • Ashley Adams says:

      Hi Rachel!
We recommend following up with your expert injector to determine the best step! Some filler can be dissolved if needed.

  • Jodie says:

Hi I’m having nose filler done. Am I able to go out for drinks with my friends in the evening without it affecting the filler? Thanks

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Jodie! We recommend to avoid drinking alcohol for six to ten hours after treatment, since it may result in additional bruising. However, it will not affect the result of your filler, so you are more than welcome to go/partake if you wish!

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Marissa! A spray tan prior is fine, however we will have to thoroughly clean the area. With that being said, you may want to have your spray tan 24-48 hours before your filler!

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hey Sophie! Once the swelling and redness has resolved, you are more than welcome to use the wax strips or hair removal cream above your lip.

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hey Amy! We are okay to proceed with lip fillers after your breast augmentation, as long as it is okay with your surgeon! We do recommend avoiding blood thinning medications for 1 week prior to your injections.

  • Deidra says:

I had surgery 3 weeks ago to repair facial fractures. It will be 3-4 months to completely heal. Will I be safe to do my usual voluma and sculpture injections then?

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Deidra! As long as everything is healing properly, you should be fine to proceed with Voluma! I recommend following up with your surgeon prior to your filler treatment.

  • Mahmoud says:

After how many hours can I resume my regimen, especially if it includes ingredients like glycolic, Azelak, retinol, and antioxidants ?!

I mean in case of an under eye filler.

Also one more question, fillers can sometimes leave the face skin distorted after sometime, Will this happen even if I did only under eyes filler ?! Thank you ?

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Mahmoud! You may resume your normal skincare regimen the next day! It’s important to have an experienced professional administer your injections in order to make sure they are done correctly.

  • Jane says:

I’ve been on morphine for 5 months, (Zomorph) 60ml daily, as prescribed.
Will this affect the tesult of restyling filler, for my cigarette lines, Booked for first week in July?
    Thankyiu

    • Ashley Adams says:

Hi Jane! This will not affect the result of your lip filler. We advise that you stop all blood thinning agents, including NSAIDS and supplements, for one week prior to filler to reduce the chance of bruising. We apply topical arnica and give you ice at the time of your visit to further reduce the bruising risk.

  • Tayler Radcliffe says:

I’m receiving lip filler on Monday, is it safe to get an arm tattoo the following day Tuesday?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Tayler, thank you for your question. There is no contraindication to these two being close together, but we would suggest moving further out due to the risk of infection from tattooing which is rare!

  • Linda says:

I had silicone without knowing put in the top of my nose … 10 years later the area swelled up and I have lumps… the Dr injected them and it’s been a week the swelling has gone down but the lumps are still there… getting smaller but how long before they go away…. I’m going crazy and so nervous..,,

  • Pam says:

Just received filler for my nose bridge. Will I have issues with the shape of my results if I constantly have to wear N95.

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Pam, thank you for your question. Once filler is placed, it does not move without intense manipulation. The N95 should be totally fine!

  • Laura says:

If I’m having Botox around my eye area (crows feet) how long should I wait before year trough fillers please? Would like to book it for 3-4 days after, is this ok?
Please advice time between Botox and filler. Thank you

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Laura, thank you for your question. You can do Botox and filler the same day, but if your are going to stage it then it may behoove you to wait until the Botox has kicked in to see that result and then inject the tear trough filler!

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Nancy, thank you for your question. All of these are ok to take before Botox and filler, but we recommend stopping the CoQ-10 and fish oil approximately 7 days prior just to prevent any additional bruising!

  • Pam says:

Hi, how soon after jawline, cheek and chin fillers, can I go back for more? Ince the treatment was done, I notice a difference, however almost a well later, it doesn’t really look much like I got it done! Or is it best to wait 2 weeks and then go back to the pratitnor who did it?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Pam, thank you for your question. We recommend waiting two weeks to allow for any inflammation and bruising to subside, then you can absolutely build on the filler!

  • DawnMarie says:

HI! I am POST JUVADERM lip filler, almost 24 hours and one side of my lip, near parenthesis, seems raised, and is def noticeable to touch. Should I massage this area?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Dawn, thank you for your comment! It is possible to feel the filler immediately post-injection and massage a few days after swelling and bruising goes down is perfectly fine.

  • Nellie says:

I had lip fillers done today, but a couple of hours later I noticed a mustache/shadow like appearance right above my upper lip. Is this normal? Will it go away?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Nellie, thank you for your comment! That sounds like a bruise, but I would send a picture to your provider to make sure this is normal.

  • Chey says:

    Hey there

I had cheek fillers and one side is a lot more pronounced then the other side. And it is very bumpy along the cheek bone of the side that is more pronounced. Will this go down

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Chey, swelling is a possible side effect of dermal fillers. If this persists please contact your provider.

  • Spbgesp says:

What about a silk sleep mask? What are your thoughts about wearing a silk sleep/eye mask at bedtime – the night of injection plus any other night? Obviously these masks are very loose fitting and don’t apply pressure but I am curious what the recommendation would be given that the mask covers the areas of injection. I wonder if voluma in the cheek area would be affected or if the under eye or apples of cheek would be negatively affected.

As you mentioned elevated head and laying on the back are important but…what if while asleep you end up on your side…how bad is that the night of filler (eye/cheek)?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi, thank you for your comment! I would not wear any type of mask during the recovery post filler. You can resume after normal bruising and swelling resolves.

  • Amy says:

Can you do facial cupping after having filler and Botox? Will it mess it up in any way or cause the Botox and filler to not last as long?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Amy, you can not do facial cupping the day of Botox, but the day after is fine. As far as filler, we suggest waiting two weeks before cupping. It will not cause the Botox or filler to be metabolized quicker.

  • Britney Slim says:

Hi! I am looking at getting my lip filler but I have a surgery u set general anesthesia at the end of the month. Is it okay for me to get fillers for this or will the surgery potentially affect/ruin my lips? Thanks!

  • Madison says:

Hi there! I’m getting lip filler next month but my friends have planned a pub garden evening the night before.. would I be able to have1 alcoholic drink followed by lots of waters if I’m getting my lips done the following afternoon ?

  • Lorrie kipp says:

After getting filler can you tan or be in the sun . Going on vacation and prepping skin in a tanning bed and will be in the sun on vacation .

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Lorrie, we do not recommend tanning bruises. This can cause permanent pigmentary changes to your skin, so it is not the filler that will be effected, but more the bruising as a result of the filler.

  • Robert Meyers says:

    Good morning
I would like to get restylane injections for my eyes.
Which vitamins and supplements should I stop prior to the injections.
    Aspirin 81mg
    Finasteride 2.5 mg
    Singular 10mg
    Claritin 10mg
    Fish oil
    Vitamin b complex
    Calcium and vitamin D
    CoQ-10
    Biotin
    Magnesium
    Thank you

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Robert, we would recommend you stop taking aspirin, fish oil, vitamin B complex, calcium and vitamin D, CoQ-10, biotin and magnesium prior to receiving injections. Please check with your injector for further information.

  • CAROLINE GILLIGAN says:

    HI
I want to get some Ipl for pigmentation done and I am booked in to get fillers for smoker lines on my top lip. How long should I wait or can I get the first IPL treatment done a week before the fillers ?

    • Meghan Landry says:

Hi Caroline! You can go ahead and have your IPL treatment done prior to your filler appointment. No need to wait until after!

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Sheila, great question! You can use glycolic solution with filler, but not on the same day of filler injection.

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Elvia, as a good rule of thumb, non-invasive lip treatments are okay a week after the injection. For questions on specific treatments please contact your expert injector.

  • Zap says:

Hi, I had facial (hyaluron) filler and want to bleach my teeth a week later with (infamous) “braces” to keep your mouth open. Is it true that this should be avoided, cos the filler must “settle” in your skin during 3-4 weeks?

    • Shared Account says:

Hi Zap, thank you for your comment! The filler will not move and it should be completely fine to bleach your teeth.

  • Beth says:

Hello I want to ask a question, I had my lips done 2 days ago nearly and the women said to not massage my lips at all? Is this right as I have no clue.
Currently my top lip on the right goes a bit down compared to the other and I need to know if it should be massaged.

    • Shared Account says:

Every injector is different so it would be best to consult with your treating provider. It is okay to massage the lips a few days post injections, but will not help with the swelling that you currently have.

  • Jane Johnson says:

I use a dental appliance for Seep Apnea at night. It stretches my cheeks out or poofs them out. Not my normal face shape. Can I get filler above my lip if I wear this device. I assume I should not wear the device immediately after the filler, if that is true, how long before I can wear the device again.

    • Shared Account says:

Hello Jane! Someone from our office will be reaching out to you via email shortly. Thank you for your question.

  • Brandi says:

I had lip filler and Botox done yesterday at 10 am Botox in my forehead and crows feet can I get a lip wax today and eye brow wax?

Hi Brandi! Thank you for your comment. We suggest checking with your injector before waxing due to how close it is to your injections.

  • Veronica says:

    Hello,
I had tear trough filler over three weeks ago, and now my undereye and upper cheek area is very swollen. My injector said it was because I had one alcoholic beverage and to stop drinking. Is this correct advice, and is there anything else I should do? What could possibly be causing this?

    • Shared Account says:

Hello Veronica, we are so sorry to hear about your issue. Someone from our team will reach out to you shortly, and thank you for your question!
