THE SCIENCE:
Using highly concentrated energy, hair follicles are targeted and pulses of light are emitted. The laser’s energy is attracted to the pigment of hair (caused by melanin), the same way sunlight is attracted to darker clothing. Since the melanin in hair is more concentrated than the surrounding skin, the follicle absorbs the light first. This damages and eventually destroys the follicle and also explains why the surrounding skin is left undamaged. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second.
During laser hair removal treatment, the laser’s pulse may feel very similar to that of a small snap of a rubber band. Within one to three weeks after the treatment, you will notice the treated hair beginning to fall out. While one treatment can be quite effective, optimal results are usually seen be receiving a series of treatments.
