What IS a Vampire Facial?

Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy, and colloquially known as a “vampire facial” when used on the face) is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin. Results can include improved texture and firmness. It is also very effective in reducing scarring from acne, surgery, and from stretch marks. Microneedling may also be combined with a topical treatment, like PRP (platelet rich plasma) or another vitamin-rich serum.

The Steps:

1. Cleanse face, apply numbing agent

2. Draw small amount of blood from patient (for PRP)

3. Blood is placed in a centrifuge, separating the plasma from the blood

4. Fresh platelet rich plasma is used in conjunction with the microneedles, as it is applied to the face/skin.

5. Patient’s face is cleansed again, with an addition of a facial moisturizer

Why PRP?

PRP stands for platelet rich plasma and stem cell rich, which means that the platelet rich plasma is also rich in stem cells.  Plasma is the liquid component of blood (as opposed to the cellular component). Within the plasma are growth factors, vitamins and other proteins that have specific jobs to do while using the blood in your body as a transport mechanism. Research has shown that platelets, a type of blood cell that helps your body form clots, also carry a ton of growth factors. The biology behind this is that after a clot is formed, the tissue in that area needs repair and the platelets slowly release growth factors into the area of injury.

Within the beauty field, researchers and physicians have decided to harvest the regenerative and healing powers of platelets to help boost collagen and elastin formation in the skin. When platelet rich plasma is applied that is also rich in stem cells, they are adding growth factors to stimulate more collagen and elastin formation. If this is done at the time of microneedling, the same channels that are made by the microneedles increase the depth of penetration and absorption of the PRP and growth factors into your skin and increase the stimulation of collagen and elastin production.

Afterwards:

After the procedure, the area treated will be tender and have the appearance of a small sunburn. This typically lasts 1-2 days, as the skin begins to heal itself, inducing collagen and elastin production for reparations. With a near painless procedure and virtually no downtime, microneedling is an effective, inexpensive way to reignite your own body’s natural anti-aging mechanisms.
